We used to have access to more databases and journals, why do we no longer have access?
Every year, Auraria Library reviews resource subscriptions and negotiates with publishers and vendors to provide access to resources that help with learning, teaching, and research on Auraria campus. Over 80% of the Library’s Learning Materials budget is allocated to ongoing journal packages and databases (subscriptions) that have 5-6% average price increases each year. Cancellations during normal years cover publisher price increases not a major budget cut.
Additionally, Auraria Library was tasked with a 4% reduction in fiscal year (FY) 2024 and an additional 2.6% reduction in FY 2025. One-third of the library's budget is used for purchasing or subscribing to learning materials (LM) such as databases, journals, books, ebooks, streaming media, newspapers, data and statistical sources, DVDs, anatomical models, and more. Auraria Library's priority was to preserve faculty and staff positions as the library has a small number of employees for the large number of students, faculty, and staff we serve. Therefore, in FY 24 the collections budget was reduced by $241,835 and in FY 25 it was reduced by $266,956. This totaled $508,791 (13.9%).
